I am here.

One day, I was in the hospital waiting room and saw a quarrying couple. Her forehead carefully wrapped by doctor, the wife was crying, obviously very worried about her sickness. Sitting next to her was her husband, who kept repeat saying in a loud voice to her, “Do not cry!” The words did not work, of course. The more she cried, the more he raised his voice, repeating the same “do not cry”, over and over.

It came to a point when the wife was too angry and heart-broken that she started to slap her husband. She was asking for some love and caring, for God’s sake. Nevertheless, all the husband did was repeating the boring three words, till his wife left the scene.

If there was anything I should have done, perhaps was that I should go to the husband and tell him that the words a woman wants to hear most. Not “Do not cry!”, with no doubt. Not “I love you” even. For most of the time, all a man needs to say to his lady, is simply “I am here.”
