On Carving Knives

14079959_838953552873328_550946472400733863_n

<On Carving Knives>

I have been teaching eraser stamp carving for some time. One of the most popular questions students asked me is,”When do you know when you need to change the carving knife blade?”

It depends.

For daily stamp carver like myself, it takes me every two months to change a NT cutter D-400 knife blade, but every three months when it comes to Olfa AK-4. The more experienced you are to carving, the longer your blade can last. The key is, it’s not when to change the blade, but rather, HOW TO USE your blade.

Here are some of my tips on carving knives:

  1. Every knife is destined to its most matching eraser board (just like human beings!) If you buy very inexpensive (cheap, to be exact) eraser board and the quality is not so good, do not use the most expensive knife to carve on it. You will just end up shorten the life span of your expensive blade.
  2. If possible, prepare another carving knife with the same brand. This second knife with new blade serves as a comparison when you doubt whether your first knife needs a blade change. Simply carve a line or two on the same board using both knives, and judge by yourself.
  3. Every knife serves only a single purpose. If you decide to use the knife for eraser stamp carving, do not use it to carve on wood, paper etc.!
  4. Always cover your knife blade with the plastic cap and place them horizontally at all times. Do not put them in pen stand.
  5. For Japanese knife users like myself, Olfa and NT Cutter are the two most popular knife brands. Olfa’s blade are more endurable than NT Cutter’s, as their prices indicate their differences.

Look at your budget, expectation and volume of your carving, to decide which knife to choose from. Remember:  intention, not activity.

Hope it helps.

Alphabet Stamps – Japanese Version

I was in a bookstore the other day, and saw some alphabet picture erasers, which designs were similar to those I were using when I was a kid.

abc like

It gave me an idea to create my own set of alphabet stamps, and “Wouldn’t it be more interesting if I make them a Japanese version instead of English version?”

So with the help of  e-dictionary, I got some inspirations of what to draw on each alphabet. That one new thing I had to consider, was whether the drawing will block too much of the letter, as I needed each letter to be shown clearly.  Also, there are letters like “Q”, “X”  and “V” which do not have a Japanese word to match with. So I simply used some English words which Japanese people often use (by pronouncing the sound of them) instead.

They are now all carved and ready for the handle-gluing process. I hope to display and sell them in coming’s handicraft fair in Kowloon Bay, Hong Kong on 20-21 August, 2016.

Just in case, please do not use them as erasers!

I am not an eraser. I am an eraser stamp.

This 3D eraser stamp was carved with a piece of thick white eraser a friend had given me months ago. The eraser carving method was similar to wood carving, except you could simply use a cutter or thin carving knife instead.

On the bottom I carved a small Chinese character, “heart”,or “mind”.

Not difficult at all!

Alphabet Stamps (Japanese Vocabularies)

Started my alphabet stamp carving project two days ago. Would like to design stamp using Japanese vocabularies, adding some wafu to them, as always.

Here are the first six stamps. Looking forward to seeing them all? Me too. Let me know what Japanese vocabulary you would like to see.

Thank you for the encouragement and generosity, my first stamp charity event last month came to great success! I have collected HKD875 and have donated them all to 叙福樓集團有限公司 for their Suspended Meal Project.

Rubber stamp carvers like me should realise that during the stamp-carving process, not only do we produce beautiful stamps, but also a lot of rubber residues/leftovers. Those little pieces of rubber are too much of a waste if being thrown away, and I always think of ways to utilize them.

In views of the growing population of the people in need in Hong Kong, I came up with an idea yesterday by carving small stamps with the little rubbers to raise a fund for charity in my stamp booth ( September 6th and 7th, in Tseung Kwan O PopCorn Shopping Mall). I would set up a donation box in my booth and any one are welcome to donate a free amount of money. In return, they will receive a stamp from me. The donation will be 100% donated to 叙福樓集團有限公司 for their Suspended Meal Project. Those meals will be available in their Wong Tai Sin and Tin Shui Wai restaurants for those in need. Donation amount details will be posted afterwards.

In addition, I welcome participation of other stamp carvers. May it be an eraser stamp or some unused rubber stamp board, whatever useful are much appreciated.

Thank you very much.
