Sunday is a happy day for Hong Kong’s domestic helpers. It is their weekly off day, a day to gather with friends, speak in their own language, dance, manicure/pedicure, play bingo/poker cards/mah-jongg, haircut, do cross-stitching, you name it. The Central HSBC headquarters is one of the most crowded spots for their Sunday gathering. I enjoyed my time being there today to make a sketch, while listening to their dance music, watching illegal hawkers being chased, and feeling the warm summer breeze.
Thanks to my friend who accompanied me while I was sketching. We saw a different side of Hong Kong today.
While heading to work. This is what I see.
I bet the life inside their smart phones must be so extraordinary. I bet things are far more interesting than what’s going on inside the train. So much so that I received zero eye contact from the people standing in front of me.
I should wear a pokemon costume next time. Perhaps that can steal their attention from phone screens, for 3 seconds.
I miss those days when we got our news not from our iPhones but from the newsstands. Remember the time when we had to pay for the news?
